Exploring Kansas: New Look at the Sunflower State
Published in Paperback by Sounds of Kansas (May, 1996)
Average review score:

Finding Hidden Travel TreasuresMil Penner takes us to small towns and hamlets off the beaten track in a state that many people pass over. The book reads like a series of articles about the counties he highlights. There are not many habitated towns in most of the counties he explores.
He highlights local history and culture, both in artifacts and personalities. He looks at the Santa Fe Trail, ethnic settlements, wildlife, festivals, museums (both public and private), historic structures and small industries.
If you are planning on travelling to or through Kansas, this book will open your eyes to some opportunities that aren't found in more popular travel guides. If you are looking for a quiet and unrushed place to tour, you will find it in Kansas. This is a ground-level view of a well-grounded state.

Farming the Dust Bowl: A First-Hand Account from Kansas
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Kansas (March, 1986)
Average review score:

UniqueHaving searched for a first hand account of what it was like to attempt to farm during the dust bowl I was very pleased to find this work. Svobida provides a year by year account of his attempts to do that and I enjoyed learning from his trials and tribulations. The book is unique, as to this point, it is the only work I've found that gives the details of how farmers attempted to prevail during the dust bowl years. Increased an already high admiration for those who lived in and trhough the dust bowl.

REVIEW QUOTESNine year-old Eva Hoffman is an Austrian refugee whose family has found a precarious safety in Topeka, Kansas in 1951, the year of the landmark desegregation case. As the rising river inundates the town, the Hoffmans open their home to refugees from the flood, and Eva learns the complexities of prejudice-and courage-both within and outside her family.
"A richly evocative story of the awakening to adulthood." -- The Los Angeles Times.
"A refreshing and extremely moving novel." --Ms. Magazine
"Eva is...reminiscent of a Carson McCullers heroine." --The New York Times.

From Kansas to Cannibals: The Story of Osa Johnson (Avisson Young Adult Series)
Published in Paperback by Avisson Pr Inc (December, 2001)
Average review score:

The New Woman of the Twentieth CenturyOsa Johnson WAS the new woman of the twentieth century. She did not stay home and tend to her husband and raise kids. She tended to her husband while enjoying the adventure he pursued. The twentieth century was a time of change for women in America. This book is a wonderful way of introducing young people to the changes made by this woman for other women of her time. In fact, I think adults would also enjoy reading this as much as I did. It sparked an interest that continues to grow.

The George Brett Story
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (October, 1981)
Average review score:

A shame the book is out of print. Now that George Brett has finally been elected to the Hall of Fame (with the 4th highest vote total in history no less), interest in reading about this baseball immortal is at a high and it's very unfortunate that Garrity's book is no longer in print. The book was written after Brett's wonderful 1980 season, when he captured the hearts of America with his quest to become the first player to hit .400 since Ted Williams did it in 1941. The book's a great look into the life of a player on the brink of superstardom. It'd be great now to get a book on Brett's entire career, because many of his highlights occurred after the '80 season. If you're a Brett fan, I strongly urge you to find this book!

God's Ear
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (April, 1989)
Average review score:

God's EarYou don't have to be Jewish to love Rabbis. If you have never read Rhoda Lerman, you really should. God's Ear delves into the depths of Orthodox Judaism in the context of an amazing father and son relationship. Highly comedic, deeply spiritual. Yussel's dying father begs him to come west from New York and his excellent insurance business to take over his father's rattrap synagogue. The last thing Yussel wants is to be a rabbi and experience the pain of his father's congregration. The temptations (a gorgeous redhead) of the world drive Yussel to feel the pain of others and ultimately to secure a place in heaven for his father. You can read Lerman on various levels: humor and story; language or history. All of Lerman's novels carry the same weight in terms of the type of indepth subject matter research as well as amazing language. She has a great ability to play with the origins and connections of words. Although her novels are considered fiction, you can learn a lot! Happy Reading and Laughing.
